У 1845 році екіпаж кораблів «Терор» і «Еребус» під командуванням капітана Джона Франкліна відправився з Англії на пошуки морського шляху, що з'єднує Атлантичний і Тихий океани. Їх шлях лежав через північне узбережжя Північної Америки, де експедицію чекали суворі погодні умови, хвороби, брак їжі і припасів. Однак ці біди були не єдиними проблемами команди. Кого їм справді варто було боятися, так це велетенського чудовиська, яке переслідувало кораблі по суші. Гігантський монстр на прізвисько Туунбак, схожий на білого ведмедя, люто вбивав і пожирав моряків, залишаючи після себе сліди розрухи і обгризені трупи. Вважався легендою, він ожив і став кошмаром для команди Франкліна. Ось так, загубившись в льодах без надії на допомогу з великої землі, чоловіки почали боротьбу вже не за відкриття нових шляхів, а за власні життя. Ден Сіммонс, автор роману, покладеного в основу серіалу, змішав разом реальні події і ескімоську міфологію, в якій часто фігурує цей жахливий монстр.
