Прага, 1942 рік. Рейнхард Гейдріх – начальник Головного управління імперської безпеки Третього рейху, протектор Богемії і Моравії, а також третя людина нацистської Німеччини після Адольфа Гітлера й Генріха Гіммлера. На руках "Празького м'ясника", як його називали ще за життя, тисячі невинних життів. Невелика група людей вирішила провернути авантюрну операцію "Антропоїд", метою якої є знищення Гейдріха. Якщо щось піде не за планом і когось схоплять – краще відразу померти. Ліквідація такого високопоставленого чиновника Німеччини змінила б хід історії і прискорила б перемогу над нацизмом.

On May 27, 1942 the Nazi Reichsprotector of Bohemia/Moravia, the "Hangman" Reinhard Heydrich, died from the bullets of unidentified resistance fighters. Hangmen Also Die is the story of Heydrich's assassination in fictionalized form. It was Bertolt Brecht's only comparatively successful Hollywood project; the money he received allowed him to write "The Visions of Simone Marchand", "Schwyk in the Second World War" and his adaptation of Webster's "The Duchess of Malfi". Hanns Eisler won an Academy Award for his musical score.

The terror and oppression that follow cause Allied authorities in London to authorize a secret mission to kill the man who has come to be known as "The Butcher of Prague". The film explores shows the operation leading up to Heydrich's death as well as the massive German reprisals that followed it.
