Театральний режисер Хенрік Воглер часто залишається після репетицій один, щоб наодинці розміркувати над постановками. Цього дня в театр несподівано повертається Ганна, провідна актриса, нібито у пошуках загубленого браслета, якого у неї ніколи не було.Ганна розказує Воглеру про те, як ненавидить свою померлу матір, яка була коханкою режисера і алкоголіком. Її слова занурюють Воглера в спомини про навіжену Ракель, до якої він переживав дивне почуття симпатії і відторгнення.
