Головна героїня - юна дівчина, на ім'я Мері Кетерін. Її батько, професор, все життя присвятив дослідженню крихітного народу званого Листяними людьми. Він розповідав доньці безліч історій про цей таємний світ, та вона ніколи не вірила й вважала його божевільним. Одного разу професор іде до лісу й не повертається додому, тож Мері вирушає на його пошуки. У лісі, завдяки дивовижним і чарівним силам, дівчина зменшується в розмірах і стає свідком існування того самого світу, про який їй стільки розповідав батько. Протягом декількох років режисер спостерігає за побутом місцевої громади. Матеріально мешканці селища видаються зубожілими, проте їхнє життя сповнене різнобарвними враженнями, сміхом і родинним теплом. Але будівництво велетенської греблі на річці Ніл ламає віковічні традиції життя цих людей у гармонії з природою. Спроби мешканців села протестувати не мають жодного ефекту. Тепер їм потрібно готуватися до переселення на невідомі землі.
