Світ майбутнього, у ньому суспільство поділено на 5 фракцій, виходячи з рис людини: Щирість, Зречення, Безстрашність, Дружелюбність, Ерудиція. Досягнувши 16 років, кожен підліток проходить тест, яким визначається, у якій фракції людина перебуватиме до кінця свого життя. Беатріс Прайер — шістнадцятирічна дівчина з сім'ї Зречення не отримує остаточного результату, тому що вона є Дивергентом — людиною, що не може належати лише до однієї фракції. Влада міста вважає, що такі нестандартні, відмінні від інших, люди, становлять загрозу для вибудованої системи Фракцій. Дівчина робить вибір, який дивує всіх, в тому числі і її саму – обирає фракцію Безстрашних. Її життя змінюється остаточно і безповоротно. Тепер її основна мета – вижити, довести, що вона гідна бути Безстрашною. Кожен її день – це боротьба з іншими претендентами на ініціювання, але найголовніша битва, звичайно ж, з собою, зі своїми страхами.
