Події відбуваються за 60 років до трилогії «Володар перснів». Головний герой Більбо Торбінс живе звичайним життям, допоки чарівник Ґендальф не пропонує йому вирушити у грандіозну подорож, щоб відвоювати втрачене Королівство гномів у дракона Смоґа. Несподівано для себе Більбо опиняється у компанії гномів. Разом їм випаде пройти незвідані небезпечні землі, заселені злом. Щоб дістатися Сходу, герої пройдуть крізь тунель гоблінів, де Більбо зустріне істоту, яка назавжди змінить його життя… Ґолума. Зустрівшись з ним на березі підземного озера, скромний Більбо заволодіє найбільшим «золотцем» Ґолума – простим золотим перснем, від якого залежить доля усього Середзем’я.
