Після десятиліть війни з інопланетною цивілізацією людству вдалося виграти битву, проте наслідки виявилися катастрофічними — поверхня Землі стає непридатною для життя. Тепер люди живуть над хмарами, але деякі з них продовжують робити вилазки вниз, де, незважаючи на ландшафти, що змінилися до невпізнання, все ще можна знайти багато корисних речей. Джек Гарпер, один з небагатьох хто лишившся в живих. Він бере участь у широкомасштабній операції по видобутку необхідних ресурсів з поверхні планети. Під час чергового патрулювання неба він рятує прекрасну незнайомку з зорельоту. Її поява запускає ланцюг подій, які змушують Джека поставити під питання його знання про планету, його місію і про самого себе.

One moment some 80 people are walking on a big city street. Suddenly a blinding light appears that transports them to a very peculiar racing course. A voice sounds in everybody’s head : “The school, the house and the prison are safe. Follow the arrows or you will die. Stay on the path or you will die. If you’re doubled twice, you will die. Do not touch the grass or you will die. Race or die.†Whether you’re rich or poor, old or young, blind, strong, handicapped, courageous or a coward; the rules make no distinction. Alix was on a train bound for Paris where she was going to audition for a film, having just left Calais where she had performed in an Ibsen play. Doug, a literature professor, had left England for Paris, where he was to attend the funeral of a dear friend. They were not supposed to meet and yet they did. They did because Alix, whose relationship with her boyfriend was at a crossroads, fancied this handsome serious-looking gentleman on the Paris-bound train. They did because Doug, although not in the mood for love, quickly fell for her. They were not supposed to meet but their brief encounter would prove to be overwhelming.
