Чоловік Керолайн розлучається з нею і одружується на багатій жінці. Забравши старшого сина, він їде і більше не цікавиться проблемами колишньої родини. Безробітна Керолайн бере молодшого сина Тобі і відправляється в безцільну поїздку по Америці. Вони зупиняються в декількох містах, де Керолайн намагається влаштувати їх життя.
