Гортон - надміру цікаве слоненя (як, утім, і всі вони, тож дивуватися не варто). Та лісова громада вважає його неадекватним - адже Гортону постійно щось верзеться. Та це - не тривожні симптоми, а всього-на-всього унікальний, надзвичайно гострий слух. Його благають про допомогу крихітні істоти - хтоськи, які заснували місто Хтовілль розміром із пилинку. І добрий Гортон вирішує за будь-яку ціну порятувати малечу від загрози. Адже, за його філософією, "жива істота - це жива істота, незалежно від розміру".
