Тут обрядові маски, нечисті у вигляді Біса і Відьми, польоти на мітлі і подорож в казкове місто Петербург до самої цариці, чарівні перетворення і справжня любовна історія, в якій як би не колобродили біси, все одно коваль Вакула доб'ється свого і завоює неприступну Оксану! Красу гогольовськой ночі, в якій оживає все: хуліганить місяць, кокетливо підморгують красуні-зірки, дихають млістю і спокоєм білі сніги, казково струмує різдвяне світло - спробували передати в цьому мультфільмі.

В основі сценарію останньої незавершеної режисерської роботи Олександра Довженка лежала книга 1949 року американської журналістки Анабелл Бакард «Правда про американських дипломатів» (вийшла російською та англійською мовами), яка викривала поведінку американського посольства у Москві. У розпал холодної війни Анабелл Бакард, співробітниця інформвідділу американського посольства, приїхала до Москви і стала радянською громадянкою. Її зразу помітили спецслужби, і радянська пропаганда вирішила зробити з її життя повчальну історію про те, як гарно жити у СРСР, і зняти фільм. Зйомки доручили Довженку. Головною метою було створити памфлет, що розвінчував би американський імперіалізм. Фільм з самого початку планувався як пропаганда, а як відомо, Довженко дуже не любив пропаганду. Але наказ Сталіна потрібно було виконувати, якщо режисер хотів працювати й надалі. Фільм не вийшов на екрани у авторському варіанті.
