Коли певний чоловік вийшов з в’язниці — він точно знав, куди прямує в першу чергу. Поки він відбував покарання, йому пощастило побачити виступ одного відомого ракуґоки (оповідача ракуґо). Він просто закохався у традиційне комічне відтворення оповідачем історії під назвою «Шініґамі», і тепер налаштований стати його учнем. Оповідач, Якумо, ніколи до цього не брав учнів, але, на загальний подив, він приймає до себе колишнього в’язня, давши йому псевдонім «Йотаро». Поки щасливий Йотаро починає своє нове життя, він зустрічає інших людей з життя Якумо, зокрема підопічну Якумо — Конацу. Конацу була донькою відомого оповідача, і Якумо взяв її до себе після трагічної смерті її батька.
