Гасне світло, актори залишають сцену і... повертаються в камери римської в'язниці суворого режиму "Ребібія". Камера зафіксувала грандіозний експеримент по постановці спектаклю режисером Фабіо Каваллі з ув'язненими, багато з яких відбувають довічний термін. Універсальна мова Шекспіра допомагає новоявленим акторам зрозуміти свої ролі, знову пізнати дружбу і зраду, владу, обман і насильство - спочатку в п'єсі, а потім і в своєму житті. І хоча підмостки цієї п'єси - в'язниця, в самому фільмі вона дивним чином зникає...
