Під час Другої світової війни італійка Джованна зустрічає солдата Антоніо, якого мають відправити на фронт до Африки. Між молодими людьми виникають романтичні стосунки, вони одружуються. Поки рідна Чехословаччина знаходиться під окупацією Німеччини, Мілош Грма влаштовується працювати на невелику залізничну станцію при Богемії. На вулиці 1944 рік, розгортається протистояння між окупантами і партизанами. Мілошу, який ще хлопчик, життя ще не встигло показати всі свої принади, на відміну від диспетчера Губічка. Мілош бере собі за приклад цього щасливого чоловіка, у якого і робота йде на лад і увагою дівчат він не обділений. Грма ж закоханий у Машу, яка працює кондуктором.
Сюжет
