Проста жінка Радха змушена в бідності й самоті виживати й ростити дітей. Залишена чоловіком, який втратив працездатність після нещасного випадку в полі, вона стикається з додатковими проблемами: неможливістю виплатити сімейний борг місцевому лихвареві, втратою дитини під час бурі. Сини, що вижили, ростуть зовсім різними. Один - спокійним і працьовитим, другий - більш буйним і небезпечним: він зв'язується з бандитами і постійно чіпляється до сільських дівчат, особливо до доньки лихваря.
