This film, chronicling the last days of Czech resistance fighter Maruska Kuderikova (played by Magda Vasaryova), is based on her diaries. Though she was tortured and eventually executed by the Nazis, her diaries indicate that she was optimistic for the humanity of her captors and did not by any means hate them. Told with simple dignity, this film makes clear why Maruska became a national hero.

Дружина Тоно сподівається, що магазин принесе їхній родині прибуток, і вони незабаром з чоловіком розбагатіють. Тоно ж прекрасно розуміє, що свояк підсунув йому абсолютно бідний магазин і ніякого прибутку від нього йому не бачити. Але він боїться пояснити це дружині, через її лютий характер, і також не може пояснити старій Лаутманн, що тепер він є господарем її майна...

The white gravestones at the military cemetery in English Brookwood display many Czech names. These were members of the British army of Czechoslovak origin who fought here and died for their homeland in the Second World War. The cries of the wounded and dying shift the story a quarter-century back.
