Сучжоуська річка в Шанхаї постає як брудний, хаотичний і водночас магнетичний простір пам’яті та таємниць — майже китайський Стікс. Мандар, молодий кур’єр на мотоциклі, звик доставляти будь-що й ніколи не ставити запитань. Він отримує дивне замовлення: переправити шістнадцятирічну Мудан до тітки. Між ними зароджується ніжність, але дівчина раптово вірить, що Мандар викрав її заради викупу. Розчарована, вона стрибає з мосту в річку, а Мандар опиняється під підозрою й потрапляє до в’язниці. Після звільнення він зустрічає танцівницю Меймеї, разюче схожу на Мудан, і одержимо шукає відповідь: чи справді кохана загинула, чи лише зникла.
