Героїню - єврейку Ірену Лілієн, дочку професора, якій вдалося втекти від гестапо, ховає сім'я поляків Малецьких. Але перепочинок триває недовго: до кінця тижня повстання придушене, місто горить. Проте Ірена продовжує боротьбу за життя... Два полюси ставлення до Ірени: стоїчний, тихий і непохитний захист цієї зовсім чужої їй жінки, до того ж колишньої коханої її чоловіка, з боку Ганни Малецької і шпигунство господині будинку Петровської - уособлення міщанства, глибинного антисемітизму та хамства.
