Бен Джарві, за походженням індієць, а за професією – винахідник-конструктор роботів, змушений працювати вуличним торговцем. Бен опинився на мілині, він змушений жити у фургончику й робити іграшкових роботів для продажу на вулиці. Ці роботи всі, як один, схожі на Номер п'ять, але тільки дизайном... Номер п'ять здобув особистість завдяки короткому замиканню, а ці малюки – всього лише бездушні іграшки. Маленькі роботи привертають увагу співробітниці відомого магазину іграшок, і вона робить Бену вигідну пропозицію – до Різдва він повинен зібрати тисячі таких роботів і продати магазину оптом. Підприємливий американець радить Бену прийняти вигідну пропозицію й обіцяє допомогти йому у виконанні замовлення. Бен укладає угоду. Разом зі своїм компаньйоном він орендує робочий цех і залучає помічників. Приїжджає і Номер п’ять, щоб допомогти своєму творцеві й другу Бену.
