У 1990-і роки Вайда знову звертається до теми війни, окупації. Канонада супроводжує весь фільм "Страсний тиждень" (1995). Варшава 1943 року. Повстання... Героїню – єврейку Ірену Лілієн, дочку професора, якій вдалося втекти від ґестапо, ховає родина поляків Малецьких. Але перепочинок триває недовго: до кінця тижня повстання придушене, місто горить. Проте Ірена продовжує боротьбу за життя... Два полюси ставлення до Ірени: стоїчний, тихий і непохитний захист цієї зовсім чужої їй жінки, до того ж колишньої коханої її чоловіка, з боку Ганни Малецької і шпигунство господині будинку Петровської – уособлення міщанства, глибинного антисемітизму і хамства. Мабуть, ще ніколи Вайда не таврував ненависні йому риси у своїх співвітчизників з такою точністю і знанням людської психології.

Papa Doc's reign was very brytal and any deviation from the rule was punishable by death or torture. A young girl is exposed to the brutallity of the Tonton Macoute (the private secret police and milicia that Papa Doc used to terrorize Haitians for 29 years. She does not understand all the ramifications of what she sees, but through her aunt's agony and fears and ultimately arrest, she knows that life around her is not good and there is a lot os sadness and sorrow too. The pace of the movie also convey very well the fact that people are trapped in this world and it seems that it will last forever. The use of very somber colours add to the evil atmosphere that lingers on the town.

Сюжет
Сюжет «Підпілля» розгортається протягом п’ятдесяти років – від часів Другої світової війни до початку 90-х, розпаду Федеративної Юґославії. 1941-го підпільники-антифашисти організовують у Белґраді справжній завод з виробництва зброї. Час плине, війна скінчилася, та вони не виходять нагору й продовжують свою діяльність. Життя на землі йде за своїми законами, а в підпіллі – за своїми.
