Ваньє вирішив зняти фільм про останнього мисливця, але тут, на погляд критиків, дещо помилився з формою - замість об'єктивної документальної стрічки Ваньє раптом зняв фільм ігровий. Тобто всі герої "Мисливця" грають самих себе, але при цьому за сценарієм режисера. І тому, при всій своїй неймовірній красі, фільм вийшов просвітницьким і повчальним - в дусі освітніх передач для школярів, а вкладені в уста головного героя слова звучать явно неприродно.
