Conversely, thirty-eight year old Darly Peters wears her failures openly on her sleeve, she bulldozing her way through life. Currently a cocktail waitress in Normal, waitressing which dominates her resumé, Darly receives news that her ex-husband, who she left eighteen years ago, has died and has deeded the house which they were building at the time in remote Palmer Valley, Alaska to her. She believes this house will be the first time in her life she will feel settled. Seeing in Marianne a stranger in need, Darly offers Marianne a ride to Portland, where she will be staying with her judgmental sister and brother-in-law. As that move to Portland also proves to be another disaster in Marianne's life, she decides to accept Darly's invitation to go to Alaska with her. Along the way, they get into one adventure after another, meeting people who may affect their view of life. What will also affect their lives is Darly's Alaska past which leads to life in Alaska not quite what they were expecting.

Corey (Fred Savage) refuses to let his emotionally disturbed younger brother Jimmy (Luke Edwards) be institutionalized, and the two run away together. They soon join forces with a resourceful girl (Jenny Lewis), who notices that Jimmy has a special talent: he is a "wizard" at video games and can achieve the high score on absolutely everything he plays. Evading their parents and a sinister bounty hunter, the trio head for a climactic showdown at the national video game championships in California.

Сюжет
Кожен ранок Луїзі доводиться ходити в один і той самий ресторан швидкого харчування – вона працює там офіціанткою. У неї є хлопець – музикант, який, гастролюючи по придорожніх забігайлівках, частенько забуває про свою кохану. Енергійна і у минулому життєрадісна Тельма, після заміжжя виявила, що місце жінки – на кухні з каструлями, а чоловіка – у кріслі перед телевізором. Таке життя не влаштовує обох жінок, і одного прекрасного дня, чаша їхнього терпіння переповнюється. Вони вирішують покинути містечко, яке їм "остогидло", подалі від своїх нестерпних чоловіків. На жаль, по дорозі їм доведеться скоїти кілька злочинів, зокрема і вбивство. Їх оголошують у розшук по всій Америці, і подружкам залишається тільки одне – будь-яким чином дістатися до Мексики.
