Вперші два роки Людовик XIV витратив незчисленні суми грошей.Зведення Версаля продовжувалося декілька десятиріч і зажадало не тільки неймовірні грошові витрати, але і залучення багатьох тисяч робочих рук.
Першим архітектором Версаля був Луї Лево, його змінив Жюль Ардуен-Мон-сар, керуючий будівництвом протягом тридцяти років. Оформлення парків було доручено Андре Лено Тру.

Події фільму відбуваються в епоху Відродження. Імператор Священної Римської імперії Рудольф II, що жив у 1552—1612 роках бу відомим меценатом. Він запрошує до Праги багатьох митців і вчених, зокрема й алхіміків з різних країн, одержимий ідеєю знайти Ґолема, міфологічного глиняного гіганта, якого можна оживити за допомогою магії.
