Мрія серба Луки - побудувати залізницю. Заради цього він їде з дружиною Ядранкою і 18-річним сином Мілосом у віддалене село, загублене в горах Боснії. Поглинений своєю пристрастю, він не помічає ні незадоволеності таким життям своїх близьких, ні наближаються воєнних дій. Але дружина, яка не бажає витрачати свій талант оперної співачки в місцевій глушині, залишає його, а син, покликаний в армію, потрапляє в полон. Місцева міліція пропонує Луці обміняти сина на врятовану їм від ґвалтівників мусульманську дівчину Сабаху. Але Лука і Сабаха полюбили один одного. Тепер Луці належить зробити нелегкий вибір.
Сюжет

Перед кончиною він просить Цане виконати його заповіт: піти в місто, продати корову, на виручені гроші купити ікону, потім купити те, що йому захочеться і, нарешті, знайти собі дружину.У місті Цане з легкістю справляється з першими пунктами дідівського заповіту… але де ж знайти відповідну жінку?

The authorities, determined not to let them achieve their aim, give a free hand to the anti-riot police in the matter of repression. The Police superintendent decides a nighttime raid upon the Diaz school, used as a sleeping quarter and a center for those providing media, medical, and legal support work. The film tells about the ordeal put through by all those who slept or worked there, courtesy of the barbarous Police forces, complete with furious baton attacks and shameless humiliation following arrests.
