After the closure of their shipyard in Northern Spain, a few former workers: Santa, José, Lino, Amador, Sergei and Reina keep in touch. They meet mainly at a bar owned by their former colleague Rico. Santa is the most superficially confident and the unofficial leader of the group. A court case hangs over him relating to a shipyard lamp he smashed during protest against the closure. José is bitter that his wife, Ana, is employed when he is not. The gap between them is widening and he is fearful that she will leave him for a co-worker. Despite arthritic legs, Ana endures night shifts at a fish factory and thinks her looks are now lost. Not everyone seems to agree including her boss. Lino, an aging family man doggedly pursuing positions beyond his qualifications. The oldest member of the group, Amador, has degenerated into alcoholism after being abandoned by his wife; maintaining an increasingly transparent pretense that his wife will soon return from holiday.

His grandmother tells him that his mother was unfaithful to his father. Regardless, ValentÃn still misses her. His womanizing father, Vincente, is on the most part absent as a traveling salesman, he who seems more concerned about his own fortunes than sending money home to take care of his mother and son. ValentÃn has dreams like most young boys, his primary one being to become an astronaut. He believes the work that he does building rocket models and space suits will assist the NASA space program, and he does whatever he can, such as walk around in heavy shoes to simulate zero gravity and hold his breath underwater, in his pursuit of becoming an astronaut, despite being slightly cross-eyed and near-sighted, which he believes will not hinder his chances. But without really realizing it, he wants more than anything to be part of a nuclear family, with his father at home and for his father to marry a pretty young woman he can call his mother. He believes Vincente's latest girlfriend, Leticia, is that woman. In the absence of a constant male influence at home, ValentÃn searches those out, whether it being his Uncle Chiche who is visiting from Ushuaia, or Rufo, the bohemian pianist who lives next door. ValentÃn tries to solve what he sees as the problems in his life to varying degrees of success, and comes to some new understandings which reconciles what he has been inadvertently told in the past and what he now sees in life.

Що дозволяє картині піднестися над рівнем пересічної продукції, так це яскравий акторський ансамбль, у якому актуальна Пенелопе Крус грає разом із вічно прекрасною Фанні Ардан та Вікторією Абріль, котра поєднує в собі згадані якості своїх партнерок. Але більшою мірою картина «Немає звісток від Бога» зобов'язана своїм успіхом гарному сценарієві з розгалуженим сюжетом.На Небесах йде боротьба за душі померлих поміж конкуруючими корпораціями: Пекло (тут тіснява, розмовляють поганою англійською) і Рай (пустельна франкомовна зона) посилають своїх аґентів на грішну Землю – за поповненням. Чим далі від зав'язки рухається режисер, тим ближчим він стає до глядача; графік розумової проповіді зривається під натиском емоцій, повінь почуттів заповнює простір екрана.
Перверсні персонажі, що стали з легкої руки Альмадовара загальником, можуть викликати не просто туристичний інтерес. Чоловіче минуле грішного янгола і чоловіче сьогодення засудженого до смерти боксера – мала частина сучасного світу, що здався на милість жінці.
