Dagwood Bumstead quits his job when his long-awaited vacation is postponed. Blondie asks J.C. Dithers to give Dagwood his job back, and Dithers agrees but on the condition that Blondie take charge of the office while he is in Washington closing a deal. Dagwood, left to tend the house while Blondie goes to work, succumbs to a neighbor's suggestion to go fishing and leaves Baby Dumpling in care of Blondie's sister, Dot, in town for a jitterbug contest. While fishing, Dagwood meets two entertainers from the Garden Cafe and when one of them, Francine, almost overturns the boat, Dagwood grabs to save her, and the "glutch" is photographed. Blondie has the film from Dagwood's camera developed, and Dithers wires her to buy some land owned by the Garden Club proprietor before he learns that it has been approved as the site of the new airport. Enroute, she picks up the developed film. Dagwood has wandered off to play pool, and Dot and her boy friend, Freddie, take Baby Dumpling with them to the jitterbug contest at the Garden Cafe. Blondie recognizes Francine from the fishing photograph just as Dagwood comes along in pursuit of Baby Dumpling. She smacks him with her purse, then leaves with Baby Dumpling. The café owner finds the Dithers telegram realizes the importance of his land. Meanwhile, reeling from the impact of Blondie's blow, wins the jitterbug contest with his wild gyrations.

A mean, greedy, glutton of a bulldog uses two unwilling parties - a frightened cat and a mouse to help him grab dinner from various residences. The scheme: Using the cat to pose as the pet for the residents; the mouse is used in one scheme while the cat poses as a sabertoothed-alley cat at a local zoo in another. The cat is instructed to gather juicy steaks and then surrender them to the bulldog, who badgers each time, "What, no gravy?!" Eventually, the bulldog holds the cat hostage for months, anticipating that the cat's "owners" will post rewards in the newspaper. The bulldog returns the cat to his masters, collects the reward and then reclaims his cat by means of a trick-bed. The dog uses his ill-gotten gains to purchase a meat butcher shop, where "acres and acres" of meat hang from the ceiling. It isn't long before the greedy bulldog must pay for his gluttony his grossly bloated carcass lies strapped to an operating table at a veterinarian's hospital, with the doctors planning to pump the mutt's stomach. Just then, the cat and mouse arrive to get their very just revenge.

Goofy is about to set up a hammock in the backyard of his penthouse apartment but is minus one tree. He immediately decides to get another one but he shows poor judgement in regards that the one he picks is unkowingly the home of a mountain lion. The lion returns to Goofy's penthouse to reclaim his tree, notices the hammock, and decides this is a much better source of relaxation than laying on a tree branch. Thus, he tries to remove Goofy from the hammock so he can relax himself and eventually a battle ensues.

Beyond living in his disapproving mother-in-law's house while he establishes his accounting career, Bill Denny is happily married to Kate Denny, the two who are celebrating their second wedding anniversary. Bill thinks he's come home without a present for Kate since a stray Welsh terrier caused a ruckus in the store where he was going to buy the present. However Kate believes her anniversary present is the terrier who followed Bill home and who Kate eventually names Archie. What neither Bill or Kate is aware of is that the terrier escaped from its owners, a bunch a smugglers who trained the terrier to be the contact for the switch between the smuggled goods and the money. Bill does whatever he can to get rid of the terrier as he and Archie don't get along. Meanwhile, the people buying the smuggled goods believe the smugglers have swindled them since the terrier has not made contact. So when ads appear in the lost and found section about a missing Welsh terrier, Bill, in trying to return Archie to his rightful owners, unwittingly gets caught in the middle. And Kate can't quite understand why Archie is always trying to go off on their walks, he doing what he was trained to do in trying to make contact for the drop. Add a harried police detective investigating a series a murders in which Bill seems to be involved, and chaos ensues.
