Вісім італійських солдатів - на грецькому острові в Егейському архіпелазі. Десь гримить друга світова війна, а тут спека, прозоре синє море, приголомшливої краси дівчата - і майже нікого з місцевих чоловіків. Ось уже складено графік відвідування місцевої повії, ось уже за купанням голяка йдуть заняття любов'ю, ось уже життя перестало здаватися однією суцільною казармою. І коли набридає футбол на морському березі, завжди можна покурити травичку, привезену заїжджим турком, і поставити на голосування питання, чи залишатися в цьому земному раю або відправитися туди, на фронт, в гущу бойових дій. Життя йде своєю чергою, і поки одні думають про своїх італійських коханих, інші знаходять собі дружин на цьому маленькому грецькому острові...

Splendor is the name of an old movie theater managed by Jordan (Mastroianni), who inherited it from his father. The theater is in decay and only generates debts and trouble, but Jordan gets aid in his almost quixotian quest from projectionist Luigi (Troisi) and ushurette Chantale (Vlady). However, Jordan is finally forced to sell the Splendor to businessman Lo Fazio (Piperno), which plans to transform it in some kind of furniture store. When Jordan leaves the theater for the last time (the very first scene), he recalls the glorious days of Splendor and movies in general.
