У 1935 році, перед початком громадянської війни в Іспанії, молодий вчитель Антоні Бенайгес очолив початкову школу в маленькому селі Баньюелос де Буреба в провінції Бургос. Завдяки своїм антиавторитарним методам він швидко завойовує довіру учнів, зокрема Еміліо, Карлоса та Хосефіни, тоді як батьки та сільські лідери ставляться до нього скептично. Бенайгес обіцяє учням, що вперше в житті повезе їх на море під час літніх канікул. Однак цьому плану заважає початок війни.У 2010 році Аріадна дізнається, що її дідусь шукає останки свого батька, який зник під час Громадянської війни і пропав безвісти в 1936 році. На прохання дідуся вона має з'ясувати, що сталося з його батьком. Тому вона вирушає до Бургоса, де під наглядом археолога Лаури досліджується масове поховання. Там вона дізнається історію Бенайгеса, який був учителем її діда.
