Події фільму стартують 1988-го року. Звичайний і нічим не примітний бізнесмен на ймення О Де-су дорогою додому, у день народження своєї дочки, напивається, починає хуліганити й закономірно потрапляє до поліцейської дільниці, звідти його на свої поруки забирає приятель - Чжу Хван. Доки товариш Де-су телефонує його дружині, сам п'яниця раптово зникає... Невідомо хто викрадає О Де-су й запроторює до імпровізованої тюремної камери, яка більше схожа на однокімнатну квартиру без жодного вікна чи то пак просто на кімнату зі всіма зручностями, у тому числі й телевізором, який на довгий час стає його найкращим (і єдиним) товаришом, інформатором, вчителем і... лютим ворогом одночасно.
