Фільм оповідає про часи підкорення Дикого Заходу, коли в 1845 році по так званій стежці Орегона йшло велике переселення з східного на західне побережжя Америки. Три сім'ї переселенців відстають від основного обозу і наймають провідника Стівена Міка, пройдисвіта і хвалька, щоб з його допомогою найкоротшим шляхом дістатися до гір і нагнати основну групу. У результаті, вони виявляються десь на безкрайньому плато, абсолютно без їжі, води і якої-небудь надії на порятунок.
