7.8 Сюжет
Дія відбувається у XIX столітті в маленькому японському селі, відстороненому від решти світу через його розташування, жителі якого ведуть майже примітивний спосіб життя. Пори року змінюються, усе завмирає у зимовий період, але і природа і люди відроджуються знову навесні. Земля не родюча, нездатна нагодувати всіх, і багато людей голодують. Тільки старшому синові у сім'ї дозволено одружуватися. Решта повинні працювати. Немовлят чоловічої статі тут просто вбивають і пускають на добриво для городу, а дівчаток продають або вимінюють на сіль. Сім'ю, що зазіхнула на чужий урожай, ховають живцем разом з дітьми і вагітними жінками, а людей похилого віку, що досягли 70-річчя, відносять на вершину священної гори Нараяма і залишають помирати наодинці.

She considers getting an abortion, but is unhappy with this solution. She falls into a relationship with Toby, a struggling young writer who lives on the first floor. Eventually she comes to like her odd room, and makes friends with all the strange people in the house. But she still faces two problems: what to do with her baby, and what to do with Toby.
