У 1870 році через наглу смерть Наполеона III франко-прусська війна не розпочалася. Потім по всьому світу таємниче зникають видатні вчені - Герц, Ейнштейн, Фермі... В результаті людство застрягло до 1940-х років у віці пари, використавши все вугілля і спаливши ліси Європи в парових котлах. Францією все ще править династія Наполеонів, і у світі йдуть війни за ще вцілілі ліси, а тих вчених, що не зникли, ловить поліція і замикає в "шараги".Авріл Франклен - правнучка вченого, в лабораторії котрого загинув Наполеон III. Її батьки намагаються зробити те, що не вдалося їх предку - створити "Абсолютну Сироватку", яка зробила б людей безсмертними. Однак в 1931-му їх теж вистежує поліція, і при втечі вони гинуть у вибуху вагона канатної дороги.
