Провівши на Місяці на самоті майже три роки, астронавт Сем Белл рахує дні, що залишилися до повернення на Землю. Удома залишилися дружина й маленька дочка, з якими він зрідка спілкується по супутниковому зв'язку. Белл намагається забрати час, що тягнеться тут незвичайно повільно — поливає рослини, вирізує по дереву й переговорюється зі своїм єдиним «другом», розмовляючим бортовим роботом на ім'я Герті.
