Це історія про двох чотирнадцятирічних хлопців, Елліса і Некбоуна. Вони випадково зустрічають під час однієї зі своїх прогулянок чоловіка, який переховується на острові посеред Міссісіпі. Його звуть Мад і він легко причаровує до себе підлітків своєю відвертістю і безпосередністю. Мад щиро вірить у забобони: черевики з хрестами, "щасливу" сорочку, яка для нього важливіша за пістолет і вогнище, з допомогою якого, можна відганяти негаразди. На острові він чекає на зустріч із своєю коханою і мріє з нею утекти на човні, оскільки поліція оголосила його в розшук, після скоєного ним вбивства. Незважаючи на страх перед незнайомцем хлопці вірять, що він добра людина і починають йому допомагати лагодити човна. Однак підлітки не в змозі зрозуміти, де правда, а де брехня в словах Мада. Чому він одне говорить, а робить зовсім інше? Стати на перешкоді Маду мають мисливці за його головою, які прибули в містечко і розпочали його пошуки.

George then holds the male cobra in a glass cage hoping that the female cobra will attempt a rescue, and he will then release it in exchange for the Nagamani. The region experiences horror and religious awakening after the enraged female cobra, with the image of its oppressor in its eyes, sheds its snake-skin and takes on a female human form, setting out on its deadly mission of tracking down and destroying her mate's oppressor, and whoever else gets in her way whether involved or not.
