1914 рік. Перша Світова війна набирає обертів. Велика Османська імперія терпить крах, а Константинополь на очах занурюється у хаос. Студент-медик Мікаель Богосян у місті проїздом. Він має намір розвивати сучасну медицину у рідному селі на півдні Туреччини, де турецькі мусульмани та вірменські християни століттями мирно живуть пліч-о-пліч.Фотокореспондента Кріса Майєрса до Константинополю привела не стільки робота, скільки полум’яне почуття до вірменської художниці Ані. Мікаель також зачарований Аною, але суперництво між чоловіками сходить нанівець, коли Імперія починає жорстоко переслідувати національні меншини. Обіцянки даються і порушуються… Але однієї не можна не дотриматися – обіцянки вижити й розповісти світові правдиву історію.

Показуючи дочкам на лелеку в небі, Назарет Манукян і подумати не міг, що він скоро пропаде, як і ця птиця. Перша Світова Війна внесла в життя вірмен метушню і нещастя. Після атаки турків на рідне місто Манукяна, чоловік виявляється далеко від сім’ї, не знаючи навіть, де його дружина і дочки. Через роки геноциду, блукач починає шукати своїх рідних, не знаючи, чи живі вони чи ні.
