Лікар "швидкої допомоги" Бендельяні протягом багатьох років веде досліди над пацюками з метою одержати необхідну людям вакцину. У нього вірить дружина, але він не зустрічає розуміння в дочки й колег по роботі. Син, будучи за характером зовсім іншою людиною, намагається оберігати батька, але фанатичне самозречення того в ім'я науки дорого обходиться всій родині. Уже перебуваючи на порозі відкриття Бендельяні губить усе, що було накопичено двадцятип'ятирічною працею. Ця втрата ще більше зближає його із сином...
