Місце дії серіалу - космічний корабель «Червоний карлик». Смертельний викид радіації вбиває на кораблі все живе, крім молодшого техніка Дейва Лістера, який перебував в сповільнювачі часу, і його вагітної кішки Франкенштейн, що знаходилася у вантажному відсіку. Холлі - бортовий комп'ютер «Червоного карлика», тримає Лістера в сповільнювачі до тих пір, поки рівень радіації не спаде до безпечного, що займає 3 000 000 років.Таким чином Лістер, фактично, виявляється останнім представником роду людського, але не єдиною формою життя на борту судна.
