Четверо чоловіків із різними долями — викладач, священик, військовий і злочинець — у певний момент життєвого шляху опиняються в непростій ситуації: чи проявити любов, чи зробити вибір на користь різних життєвих обставин або часом навіть здорового глузду. Одного дня їх усіх викликають за тою самою адресою, де їм ставить запитання про мотиви їхніх вчинків загадковий інтерв’юер...

Jerzy Stuhr wrote, directed, and starred in this drama about a man sworn to uphold the law who applies a very different moral code to himself than he does to others. As Adam Borowski, Stuhr plays a government lawyer prosecuting a variety of cases, including smuggling, theft, child abandonment, and racially motivated assault. However, Adam's own life is hardly a model by which to live. He's overextended himself financially and is trying to figure out how to avoid paying the hospital bills for his terminally ill mother. Adam is married, but he's been having an affair for some time, and, while he breaks off his relationship with his mistress, he's easily tempted into other liaisons. His wife wants to adopt a handicapped child; Adam would prefer not to have another child in the house, and he uses his influence to slow up the paperwork. And in order to reduce his tax bill, Adam has involved himself in a charitable donation scheme of dubious legality.

Стрічка є продовженням фільму Анджея Мунка "Косооке щастя / Zezowate szczęście". У 1960 році головний герой Ян Піщик саме вийшов з в'язниці і пішов у кінотеатр на фільм, який знято по його біографії. Стрічка йому не сподобалася, бо він вважає, що його зображено боягузом і зробили з нього посміховисько. Далі показують передісторію, як він потрапив у в'язницю і після смерті Сталіна вийшов на свободу. Але звичайний громадянин Піщик у комуністичній Польщі ніяк не може знайти свого місця в житті, тому завжди потрапляє під чужий вплив і зрештою потрапляє туди, де як він вважав, йому було найкраще - у в'язницю.
Сюжет

Далі йде розповідь про найважливіші етапи життя Польщі та життя майбутнього папи, з якими ми знайомимося, спостерігаючи за реальними, і за вигаданими персонажами.
