Франція, друга половина XVIII століття. У містечку під назвою Жеводан з'являється страшна істота, яку мешканці назвали Звіром, воно безжалісно вбиває жінок і дітей. Звір здається невловимим, обминаючи багаточисельні облави, його не беруть кулі, він зникає так само раптово як з'являється, і лише ті декілька, що вижили здатні описати його зовнішність.Сам король Людовик XV вирішує розібратися в тому, що відбувається і доручає розслідувати жорстокі вбивства вченому Грегору де Фронсаку. З Грегором в Жеводане з'являється ще один герой — індієць Мані — він колись врятував де Франсаку життя, і тепер вони брати по крові.
Довкола мовчазного індійця таємничості не менше, ніж довкола Звіра. Мані удається до загадкових ритуалів, а в боротьбі з монстром покладається на інстинкти і звичаї свого народу.

Young Lateef works on a construction site in Tehran with some Turks and a few illegal Afghan workers. When Lateef is given heavier tasks to compensate for new Afghan worker Rahmat, he resents his displacement and treats Rahmat cruelly. After one of his pranks, however, Lateef discovers Rahmat's secret--he is a girl named Baran. Latif's heart softens towards Baran and he shows his new affection for her by doing what he can to ease the hardships she suffers at work. When government inspectors force all Afghans to be fired from the site, Lateef discovers he cannot bear to be without her. Jeopardizing social standing and endangering his own well being, Lateef stops at nothing to save his love.
