1933 р. 19-рiчний iрландець Гi Мелiон (Таунсенд) працює за письмовим столом у коледжi Святого Iоанна у Кембриджi, коли в його кiмнату вривається найвродливiша жiнка, яку вiн бачив за все своe життя, - Гiльда Бессе (Терон), наполовину француженка, наполовину американка, яку ледве не впiймали в обiймах ii коханця, одного зi старших викладачiв коледжу. Гi та Гiльда не байдужi одне одному, незважаючи на те, що належать до цiлком рiзних свiтiв. Три роки по тому вони дiлять квартиру на Монмартрi з Мiєю (Крус), подругою Гiльди, яка втекла вiд жахiв громадянської вiйни в Iспанiї.
