Старіючий король Лір вирішує розділити владу між трьома дочками, якщо ті висловлять йому свою любов. Молодша дочка не сприймає лестощі і за це відправляється у вигнання, а дві старші — підлещуються і отримують королівство. Досягнувши престолу, вони обрушуються проти батька, який сам стає вигнанцем в бігах.
