У фортеці на далекому острові десь в Середземному морі перебуває анонімний полонений. Під страхом смертної страти ніхто не сміє бачити в'язня без маски, що приховує його обличчя. А на іншому кінці воюючої Європи, в Парижі, сильна лихоманка привела на грань життя і смерті Його Величність Людовика XIV, молодого короля Франції. Під загрозою підписання мирного договору з Іспанією, головною умовою якого повинен стати союз Людовика XIV і Інфанта Іспанського. Не буде короля - не буде вигідного весілля і довгожданого миру.
