Ледве звільнившись із в'язниці, Джон Арчибальд Дортмундер уже готується до нової справи: разом із шурином Енді Келпом, шофером Стеном Марчем і фахівцем із різних видів вибухівки Алланом Грінбергом він продумує схему з викрадення дорогого каменю з Бруклінського музею. Ось тільки компанія не підозрює, що цю коштовність їм доведеться викрадати не один раз, адже спочатку камінь опиняється в шлунку одного зі злодюжок, потім ретельно захований у відділку поліції, а потім і зовсім у сейфовій комірці банківського сховища.
