Двоє великих акторів - Роберт де Ніро і Роберт Дювал грають ролі двох братів, що шукають таємничого вбивцю, чия жорстокість не вкладається в рамки звичайного розуміння - тіло жертви розрізане навпіл. Розслідуючи це звіряче вбивство юної повії, офіцер поліції Том приїжджає в місто, де живе його брат - священик Десмонд Спелласі. У справі виявляються замішаними найбільш шановані люди міста, які жертвують величезні гроші на благодійність і церкву.
