Дія фільму починається 1280 року в Шотландії. Це історія легендарного національного героя Вільяма Волласа, що присвятив себе боротьбі з англійцями при королю Едварді Довгоногому. Він рано втратив батька, загиблого від рук англійців, і його забрав до себе дядько Орґайл, який дав йому хорошу освіту в Європі. На батьківщину Вільям повертається вже дорослою людиною, мріє завести сім'ю і жити мирним життям. Але доля розпорядилася інакше. Його наречену убили англійці, і він почав свій хрестовий похід за свободу.
