Дія фільму відбувається в Америці за часів великої депресії. Волоцюга Френк Чемберс знайшов тимчасовий притулок і роботу в придорожній забігайлівці. Він освоївся, сподобався господарю і, головне, дружині господаря. З останньою у нього виник близький зв'язок – Френк набагато молодший за її чоловіка. Через певний час молоді люди вирішують, що господар у їхньому житті зайвий... Режисер Боб Рейфелсон зафільмував по-справжньому сильне і жорстоке кіно.
