Письменник Нік Гарденія працює над новим романом у своєму притулку на березі океану. Два злочинці викрадають автора незакінченого твору і роблять його мимовільним співучасником пограбування банку. Нік змушений ховатися від поліції. Єдина людина, якій він може довіряти, - його колишня дружина Гленда. У Гленди добре серце, тому вона погоджується допомогти Ніку і ховає його у своєму будинку. Все б добре, але є одна велика проблема: Гленда вийшла заміж вдруге, і необхідно якимсь чином приховувати присутність у будинку першого чоловіка від другого, щойно призначеного генеральним прокурором. Неспокійному Ніку не лежиться під ліжком, він весь час вилазить з найнесподіваніших місць і може в будь-який момент потрапити на очі господарю дому...

A detective uncovers a formula that was devised by the Nazis in WW II to make gasoline from synthetic products, thereby eliminating the necessity for oil--and oil companies. A major oil company finds out about it and tries to destroy the formula and anyone who knows about it.
