Команда науковців працює на підводній морській станції «Глибинна зірка 6», яку фінансує командування ВМС для виконання наукових досліджень та будівництва підводних бункерів для ядерних ракет.Під час перевірки території, на якій планується побудувати шахти, науковці знаходять підводну печеру, можливо створену під час виверження вулкану мільйони років тому.
Скарпеллі пропонує провести дослідження печери, тому що у цьому регіоні було зареєстровано таємничу підводну активність з середини 1800х років.
Доктор Гелдер не хоче із-за такої затримки втрачати фінансування ВМС і вирішує знищити печеру. Створіння, що мешкало у печері прокидається.
