Середньовіччя. Один гарний, але не молодий лицар вмирає під час турніру, у якому він брав участь. Троє його зброєносців виявляються без засобів до існування, після чого самий нахабний з них надягає збрую хазяїна й здобуває перемогу в турнірі. Так вони починають заробляти на життя, беручи участь у турнірах. Купивши власний родовід, Вільям (головний герой) тепер має повне право брати участь у турнірах. Вже декілька місяців Америку тероризує маніяк, що отримав завдяки своїм моторошним злочинам прізвисько Смолоскип – він знущається, вбиває та спалює молодих жінок. Не дивлячись на всі зусилля, сміливому та безкомпромісному детективу Джейку Райлі не вдається впіймати божевільного. Тому ФБР вирішує в суворій секретності створити повністю ідентичний клон вбивці, щоб він вивів поліцію на його слід. Не сподіваючись на успіх, Джейк все ж стає напарником непередбачуваного «репліканта», що дивиться на світ очима вбивці. Тепер він повинен діяти рішуче, адже кількість жертв росте з кожним днем.
