Події розгортаються 1839 року – за 20 років до початку Громадянської війни у США. Група рабів, захоплених в Африці, піднімає заколот на судні "Амістад", намагаючись повернутися на батьківщину, але в підсумку корабель пристає до берегів Північної Америки. Бунтарів заарештовують і доправляють у Сполучені Штати. Далі починається судовий процес, що зачіпає основи державного устрою, а тому привертає увагу всього суспільства. Для самих підсудних це шанс повернути свої права і свободу.Сюжет
