Це казка про хлопчика Нільса, котрий, пожартувавши з домовика, був настільки зменшений у розмірах, що став не більшим за жабку. Трапилося це навесні, коли над будинком Нільса пролітали дикі гуси, до яких вирішив пристати домашній гусак Мартін. Вчепившись за шию Мартіна і намагаючись затримати його вдома, Нільс вирушив у подорож з дикими гусьми. Ця подорож завершується пізно восени. За цей час хлопчик-мізинчик Нільс, вивчивши мову всіх птахів і звірів, під керівництвом старої і мудрої гуски Акки, поступово усвідомлює, що основним для будь-якої живої істоти, і для людини зокрема, є турбота про інших і допомога іншим.
